Thread starter littleGem Start date Jun 5, G'days guys the old td42 motor in my Gu ute is starting to get up in the kms bracket and while Its still got a bit of life left in it I'm looking at what to do with the motor, now from my research the TD's are never quiet the same once they've been opened up so will need to be completely replaced and at 9k just for a new 0km block I started looking at other alternatives and figured for the same coin 25k drive in drive out I could do a complete motor swap.
1hz. V 1hdt
So this is a 2 part question is getting the TD42 completely rebuilt as bad as everyone says as that would be the cheapest and easiest? If they are would you go td42 again or a 1hd-fte or 5.
Thanks in advanced guys and any help is greatly appreciated. As much as I love Toyota can't see putting a 1hd-fte in it as a good option, really not much benefit over a TD42 Also I have never had any luck with rebuilt motors either. Have a chat with Towie he is happy with his 6. I think you would be stuggling to find an fte with under k on it, not many k's for these engines but they are still commanding 7 - 8 k just for the engine which is pretty close to the rebuild cost of the td42, which wouldn't involve conversion costs either.
Dont know anything about the Cummins but think it would be a good thing. Couldn't afford the 1VD or the 6. I spent 9k on a 1hz rebuild to turbo spec, 23, klm later it was back in the shop with a piston issue - another 2k later it was back on the road. If i had my time again i would have done the 1hdtfte conversion in a heartbeat, that was a landcruiser so the conversion costs would have been less than what you'd be up for.Sure, ad-blocking software does a great job at blocking ads, but it also blocks useful features of our website.

I have read and been told that the factory turbo engine 1HD-FTE is the better option due to the power. I will want to tow a van in the next years so we are looking for the "retirement car" to travel in. Again I have read and been told installing an after market turbo on the HZJ doesn't always work. All the HDJ vehicles I have found to date with these low km's and in this condition are just out of my price range. Given the fact that this car is in such excellent condition with low km's I feel it would make a very good platform so I would be prepared to fit a new 1HDT-FTE engine.
The conversion would be done a little further down the track may in 12 months. My question to those more experienced than I is: Is this a sound strategy? What are the pitfalls of going down this track.
Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

I know the torque peak is at a much higher RPM on the FT engines than on the T engines, I'm seeking input on the "driveability" differences as far as climbing up steep grades, etc. I would think the FT engines would be better runners on highway, comments?1914 patch
And has anyone successfully done any kind of conversions, modifications, adjustments, etc, to an FT engine to boost the lower-rpm torque, or bring the torque peak down into a lower rpm range? I suspect you'll find the FT produces the same torque as the T at lower rpm, just it keeps building to a higher peak at higher rpm.One of the most popular engines we stock is the Toyota 1HDT. Commonly out of the 80 series Landcruiser, the 1HDT is a 4. Fitting one of these 4. The bellhousing bolt up is the same as the 1HZ non turbo engine and all the electrics will swap over.
